Novosibirsk Symphony OrchestraNovosibirsk Symphony Orchestra has been well-known outside Siberia for a very long time. It has become a cultural wealth of not only the city of Novosibirsk and the Siberian region but of the whole Russia.
According to the opinion of some foreign and Russian critics, musicians and audience, the orchestra can be "rated at the same level as the orchestras of Moscow and Saint-Petersburg " ...it is one of the most splendid orchestras of the present days: and the way these outstanding musicians played "Sheherazade" by Rimsky-Korsakov in the second part was just dazzling. Arnold Kats achieved maximum with his orchestra with minimum of gestures. ("Nice-Matin", France).
Set up in 1956 and headed by the People's Artist of the USSR, laureate of the National Award of Russia, professor, Arnold Kats (1924-2007) till his decease in January 2007, had tours to big and small cities and towns of our country, participated in numerous international musical festivals.
The great event that is considered to become an apotheosis of the jubilee year and as the most important in the history of the orchestra took place on 8 June, 2006. The Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra was honored to take part at the I Festival of World symphony orchestras, devoted to the state holiday "The Day of Russia". In the unique action held for the first time and organized by the Association of symphony and chamber orchestras of Russia at the Column Hall of the Dom Sojuzov the Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Arnold Kats performed among the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (conductor Z. Meta), the Toskanini Philharmonic Orchestra (conductor L. Maazel), Academia of St.Martin in the fields (conductor K.P. Flor), the Philharmonic orchestra of Radio France (conductor M.V. Chung). "Carmen" - Suite by Schedrin - Bizet and the Fifth Symphony by Tchaikovsky were performed.
The Orchestra has played more than 5 thousand concerts, music ranging from Bach and pre-Bach period to our days: Vienna classics, German romantics, Tchaikovsky, Rakhmaninov, Rimsky-Korsakov, Skryabin, Shostakovitch, Prokofiev, Schnitke, Sviridov, Gubaidulina, Denisov, Ravel, Debussi, Stravinsky, Schubert, R.Strauss, Bruckner, Mahler, Eives, Varez - the list could be continued.
The orchestra has been conducted by many world-renown conductors, some of them are: (listed in alphabetic order) A.Dmitriev, V.Gergiev, M.Gorenstein, M.Inoue, D.Kitaenko, K.Kondrashin, D.Liss, K .Penderetsky, G.Rozhdestvensky, V. Spivakov, M.Yansons.
In its staff, there are people's Artist of the Russian Federation, Honoured Artists of the Russian Federation, Honoured Cultural Workers of the Russian Federation, and Laureates of all-Russian and international competitions.
Since 1983 the orchestra had been holding annual festival "Classics and Modernity" in Novosibirsk for 22 years.
The orchestra has been recorded by Novosibirsk radio and television, at the record company "Melody". Since 1995 it released 14 CDs at the studios "Sony Classical", "Art Nova", "Russian Season", "Audite Musikproduktion", "Naxos", the majority of which were prepared by Peter Kondrashin Studio.
In 2006 Novisibirsk Symphony Orchestra was awarded by Lomonosov order for achievements in the art sphere and due to its 50-year-jubilee.
Since September 2007 Gintaras Rinkevicius (Lithuania) became the Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of Novosibirsk Academic Symphony Orchestra, principal guest conductors are Thomas Sanderling (Germany) and Fabio Mastrangelo (Italy).
